We blink less when we look at screens than we would otherwise, which creates eye strain. It can lead to tired, dry eyes or headaches, among other symptoms. The blue light can also lead to macular degeneration over time. Dr. Alpert suggests protecting your eyes by blinking, or following the "20-20-20" rule, which states that every 20 minutes you should stare at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. The article also suggests cutting back on digital devices before bed, because the blue light can postpone REM sleep.
